CHAPTER SEVEN
Haroldâs pickup truck was parked in front of her house when she turned down her street. She checked her phone. It was just before ten. Loretta walked a little faster, eager to get home. As soon as she was close enough, she spotted him waiting on the front porch.
âWhatâs the matter?â he asked when she crossed the front yard.
âI just prefer to be inside right now,â Loretta said, out of breath. She quickly opened the front door and rushed inside.
âHey, hey,â Harold said with his hand on her arm. âYou look like youâre running from a ghost. Is everything okay?â
âIâm not running from a ghost,â she said. âI did get a little spooked, though.â
âBy what?â he asked. âOr by who?â
âHold on a minute,â Loretta said. âLet me grab a drink of water and then Iâll tell you all about it.â She opened the refrigerator door and grabbed two bottles of water. She handed one off to Harold and twisted the cap off the other one, draining it halfway down before she stopped for a breath.
âYou seem really shaken,â Harold said. âTell me whatâs going on.â
âItâs nothing really,â she said. âMore of a feeling than anything.â
âLoretta, just tell me what happened,â Harold said. He pulled a chair out for her to sit down.
âI decided to go for a long walk, like I texted you,â she began. âI ended up down by the new pool site.â
âDid the sight of the police tape bother you?â
âThat isnât something we havenât seen around here before,â she said. âIt wasnât the police tape. Do you remember the two old guys from the Italian restaurant? Lou and Marty?â
âYeah, I remember them,â Harold said. âWere they down there?â
Loretta nodded quickly and drank more of her water. âThey were down there and just kind of hanging around,â she said. âI ran into them, and they started talking to me. Something felt very off about it.â
âWhat did they say to you?â Harold asked. She could read the alarm in his eyes.
âNothing too unusual,â she said. âNeither one of them put a hand on me or said anything inappropriate if thatâs what youâre wondering. It was just odd.â
âOdd, how?â She had Haroldâs full attention.
âThey were asking me a lot of questions about what I was doing. One of them stepped a little too close to me, and I donât know, I guess I felt a little threatened,â she said. âI know none of this makes a whole lot of sense. Then they asked me something about you, whether you had said anything about the investigation or not.â
âDid they say why they were down there in the first place?â Harold asked.
âJust that their curiosity got the better of them, and they accused me of the same thing. I donât know, Harold. Maybe Iâm overreacting.â
âI donât know whether you are or not, but I learned a long time ago not to ignore my instincts. Why donât you stay away from that area for the time being? I might have to investigate these two guys myself.
