CHAPTER SEVEN

Harold’s pickup truck was parked in front of her house when she turned down her street. She checked her phone. It was just before ten. Loretta walked a little faster, eager to get home. As soon as she was close enough, she spotted him waiting on the front porch.

“What’s the matter?” he asked when she crossed the front yard.

“I just prefer to be inside right now,” Loretta said, out of breath. She quickly opened the front door and rushed inside.

“Hey, hey,” Harold said with his hand on her arm. “You look like you’re running from a ghost. Is everything okay?”

“I’m not running from a ghost,” she said. “I did get a little spooked, though.”

“By what?” he asked. “Or by who?”

“Hold on a minute,” Loretta said. “Let me grab a drink of water and then I’ll tell you all about it.” She opened the refrigerator door and grabbed two bottles of water. She handed one off to Harold and twisted the cap off the other one, draining it halfway down before she stopped for a breath.

“You seem really shaken,” Harold said. “Tell me what’s going on.”

“It’s nothing really,” she said. “More of a feeling than anything.”

“Loretta, just tell me what happened,” Harold said. He pulled a chair out for her to sit down.

“I decided to go for a long walk, like I texted you,” she began. “I ended up down by the new pool site.”

“Did the sight of the police tape bother you?”

“That isn’t something we haven’t seen around here before,” she said. “It wasn’t the police tape. Do you remember the two old guys from the Italian restaurant? Lou and Marty?”

“Yeah, I remember them,” Harold said. “Were they down there?”

Loretta nodded quickly and drank more of her water. “They were down there and just kind of hanging around,” she said. “I ran into them, and they started talking to me. Something felt very off about it.”

“What did they say to you?” Harold asked. She could read the alarm in his eyes.

“Nothing too unusual,” she said. “Neither one of them put a hand on me or said anything inappropriate if that’s what you’re wondering. It was just odd.”

“Odd, how?” She had Harold’s full attention.

“They were asking me a lot of questions about what I was doing. One of them stepped a little too close to me, and I don’t know, I guess I felt a little threatened,” she said. “I know none of this makes a whole lot of sense. Then they asked me something about you, whether you had said anything about the investigation or not.”

“Did they say why they were down there in the first place?” Harold asked.

“Just that their curiosity got the better of them, and they accused me of the same thing. I don’t know, Harold. Maybe I’m overreacting.”

“I don’t know whether you are or not, but I learned a long time ago not to ignore my instincts. Why don’t you stay away from that area for the time being? I might have to investigate these two guys myself.
